General Description: Wind Creek’s 1,445 scenic acres hug the shoreline of beautiful Lake Martin just 7 miles south of Alexander City, Alabama. It offers a wide selection of outdoor activities including boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking and equestrian trails, a large camping area, and rental cabins. The campsite area is the largest in the state with 586 campsites spread over 320 acres. As the park is along the shoreline, 157 of these are waterfront sites, 39 of which are premium sites with 16 foot concrete pads. Sites include full hookups with 50 amp service. Other amenities include two laundry facilities, multiple playgrounds and bathrooms/shower facilities, and a small store at the marina.
1) Wind Creek State Park is one of the largest campgrounds we have ever stayed in, yet all of the sites are spacious and most have at least a view of the lake. Most of the sites are back-in but they are angled for easy access. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. While our site was not on the water we had an unobstructed view of the lake.
2) The staff were very friendly, especially since the wife of one of the park rangers is a long time friend of our daughter with three sons that all live on the property. The bathrooms are all very modern, heated, and clean.
3) The only drawback to the state park was due to the extreme drought in Alabama since August. Even though they draw down Lake Martin over the winter, they would have just started this process normally and the lake would only be a foot or two low. With the drought the lake was already over 6 feet lower which meant a lot of dry bank. Still the sun setting across the lake made for some great sunsets and the fall colors were at their maximum for the year.
