General Description: Opossum Campground is located just north of Shelbyville, Illinois on Lake Shelbyville. Lake Shelbyville offers many fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities in central Illinois. Most of the campsites offer electric and water hookups, although there are a few primitive campsites for tents. Amenities in the campground include restroom/shower facilities, playground, boat ramp, and dump station.
1) A very nice and well maintained campground, Opossum Campground is just one of four COE Campgrounds around Lake Shelbyville. Although it was full over Memorial Day Weekend, even then it was a quiet campground with plenty of spacious sites. Each site had room for tents in addition to the RV, had paved or gravel pads, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern pole.
2) The bathrooms were kept relatively clean, but were a bit old and in need of at least a new coat of paint. The showers were separate from the restrooms, which meant they were for both men and women. Especially over the busy weekend, these showers tended to get messy.
3) There are multiple hiking trails within a few miles of the campground on COE land and we enjoyed a tour of the dam on the lake during the weekend that is provided every weekend.
