General Description: Van Ripper State Park is located along the eastern shore of Lake Michigamme in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The park has 1.5 miles of shoreline on the lake and another 1.5 miles along the Peshekee River. There are 4 miles of hiking trails both along the shore of the lake and along the river. There is also a modern campground in the park with electric and water hookups for RVs.
1) We were only interested in the hiking trails within the park, so once we obtained a map we headed out to our chosen trail. Thus we did not see the beach or campground area. Our chosen hike was the Overlook Trail which is a 1-mile loop trail along the banks of the Peshekee River and then up and over an overlook of the surrounding forests. It was a moderately difficult trail with the elevation change up to the overlook. Hikers can either go clockwise around the loop and quickly climb a series of rough steps up to the overlook or hike counter-clockwise with a much gentler, but much longer uphill climb.
