General Description: Hardin Ridge Recreation Area and Campground is located on the shores of Monroe Lake in the Hoosier National Forest near Bloomington, Indiana. In addition to swimming, boating, and fishing in Monroe Lake there are also hiking trails and 200 spacious campsites. The campsites are all heavily shaded laid out along 3 loops in the hardwood forest. Campsites range from tent only to RV sites with electrical (30 amp) and water hookups.
1) The sites are VERY spacious with a lot of wooded area between each sites. The roads are all paved and the sites are gravel. All of the RV sites are back-in. This can be a problem for long rigs depending upon whether there are trees across the narrow road. Most of them are angled so the turn is not too severe.
2) The bathroom/shower facilities are flush toilets, however, they were not kept very clean. They were not cleaned the week we stayed and had not been cleaned in some time. Still they were better than pit toilets.
3) Be aware that except for the small lights at the bathrooms there are no lights in the campground, so it can get very dark. However, there is ample opportunity to catch views of the local wildlife. We had the pleasure of watching a family of raccoons descend out of a tree at dusk one evening.
