Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Webpage: USFS Campground
General Description: Located just minutes from the popular destination of Asheville, North Carolina, Lake Powhatan Campground is a perfect place to relax and spend some time. It is adjacent to Bent Creek Experimental Forest and thus has numerous hiking, biking, and horse trails. There is also convenient access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all the cultural venues, restaurants, and breweries in Asheville. The campground is heavily wooded within walking distance of Lake Powhatan and consists of RV sites with full hookups, as well as, water and electric hookups. Most of the sites are back-in although there are a few pull-through sites. All of the sites are paved with picnic tables, fire pit, and light poles. Amenities include restroom/shower facilities and swimming access at a beach on the lake.
1) Our first impression of the campground was that we had finally found the best place to stay close to Asheville. We have stayed in the area many times and stayed at some of the commercial campgrounds in the area, however, the seclusion of this US Forest Service Campground is the best and most convenient. All of the sites are heavily wooded with plenty of space between them for privacy and seclusion. Due to its proximity to Asheville, there are a lot of visitors with mountain bikes on the surrounding trails and most of those staying in the campground were also bikers. Consequently most of the campers were young to middle age with few families during April when we stayed there.
2) The staff were extremely friendly assisting us in finding a suitable site, since the one we had reserved had only 15 amp electrical hookups.
3) The restrooms and showers are unisex, which means you did not share your bathroom with anyone else. The were modern and clean, but unheated.
