Location: Sunbury, Pennsylvania

Webpage: Pennsylvania State Park

General Description: The Shikellamy State Park is located at the confluence of the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River and consists of two parts. The 54 acre section on Packers Island offers hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, a marina, and a boat launch. Across the river is the 78 acre Shikellamy Overlook on the western shore of the Susquehanna River. Along with a few picnic pavilions, this section of the park offers a 1.7 mile nature trail around the perimeter of the park through the woods and along the 360 foot bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River.

Impressions:

1) The section of the park on Packers Islands is relatively level with nice paved hiking trails along the banks of the Susquehanna. Along with a marina you can also rent boats or bicycles on the weekends.

2) We found the Overlook section to be of more interest with many views of Northumberland across the West Branch of the Susquehanna and Sunbury across the Susquehanna. The hiking trail is well marked except at the end as you approach the picnic area where it got a bit confusing.
