R Shaefer Heard COE Campground

Location: West Point, Georgia

Webpage: COE Campground

General Description: Located on the shores of West Point Lake, R. Shaefer Heard Campground is only a few miles from I-85.  Access to all the sites are paved with a lot of room to spread out.  Most of the sites have water and electric (30 amp) hookups and are a mix between back-in and pull through.  Other amenities include a dump station, restroom, showers, laundry, and access to the lake and hiking trails.

Impressions:

1) Our site was a pull-through site located along the banks of West Point Lake.  While many of the sites share access with other sites, which would be good for group camping, our site was located by itself.  In fact, you could not see or hear any of the other campers in the campgrounds.  In addition, the site had a concrete pad for the RV and lengthy paved driveway into and out of the site.  You could easily fit 5 vehicles in the driveway with a small parking area at each end.  The site itself was a large gravel area with picnic table and fire ring.  We even had a stairway leading down to the lake itself.  In our opinion, this site was the best place we have stayed in the past year.

2) The bathroom was about a quarter mile away from the campsite, but it was clean and heated.  The laundry facilities were at another restroom, along with the showers, that were far enough away that you would need to drive to them.  However, they did provide a small parking lot at the restroom for this purpose.

3) Since there was no sewer hookups in the campgrounds, we had to use the dump station when we left.  The dump station was well maintained and operational including a water hookup we could use to flush out our black water tank.
