General Description: Cherokee Campground is located just south of Birmingham, Alabama just a few miles south of Interstate 459. The campground are heavily wooded providing a good amount of shade at all sites. There are a number of pull through sites with sewer hookups and an even larger number of back in sites with electric and water. There is a nice swimming pond on the property with a laundry, showers, and weight room. There is no cable TV at the campground and antennae reception is not very good. There is also no WiFi connection.
1) The campground is old and has the feel of a state park with the trees and overused sites. Even then it has a special charm and we enjoyed our stay there. In December, the campground is quiet and stayed about 75% full, although it is not clear how many of the RVs were occupied versus in storage over the winter since many of the may be gone for the holidays. The sites are smaller then you would have in most state parks with little privacy between them.
2) The laundry facility is well stocked with a TV and four washers and dryers. The showers and bathrooms are clean, although they are all old and in need of renovation, like the rest of the campground. The view of the pond from the clubhouse is very nice and a favorite place for a small flock of Canadian geese.
3) I love a campsite near a running stream, although I am not sure a stream/drainage ditch right outside the RV qualifies. It did provide the sound of running water, especially with heavy rains every third day.
